Standard Tank Water Heaters

Virtually every home has a standard water heater installed, they are economic to purchase and install. These systems come with a large cylindrical tank that stands vertical and can hold anywhere from 6 to 120 gallons of water – though most residential tanks are 40 gallons.

The idea is, cold water from your plumbing system flows into the tank and fills it up. Then the heating element, either powered by propane, electric, or gas is initiated and begins to heat the water inside of the tank. Once the water in the tank reaches the desired temperature, the EPA recommends 120 degrees, the heating element disengages and the heated water sits and waits for someone to use it.

If the water sits in the tank long enough without being used it will begin to cool and the heating element will engage again and heat the water back to the designated temperature. When any amount of water is used from the tank, it fills itself back up. So, you constantly have the entire tank volume full of water that is heated to the designated temperature – whether you are home and using hot water or not.

Tankless Water Heaters

The tankless water heating system is a response to the drive to be more energy efficient in our homes. This system does not come with a tank, thus the name, and therefore does not store water for use later. Rather, the tankless water heating system heats water on demand and the system shuts off when hot water is not needed.

Typically the size of a small suitcase, the tankless water heater is a small box that is connected to water pipes. When the hot water faucet is turned on somewhere in the home the sensors within the tankless water heater engage the heating element, powered by propane, gas, or electric, to heat the pipes that the cold water is traveling through.

This process can efficiently heat two to five gallons of water per minute. Tankless systems come in various sizes, so it is important to very thoughtful about the number of people in your household and the volume of hot water needed. If your system is the right size, it can maintain the volume of two to five gallons of heated water per minute for the entire duration that the hot water faucet is engaged. However, if your system is too small, the flow of water will slow to a trickle and the water needs to move more slowly through the pipes to be effectively heated.
