Standard Tank Water Heaters
Standard water heaters are probably the most recognizable of any water heating system. These are the units that are designed to hold and heat water in a vertical, cylindrical tank that is typically installed in a closet, basement, or garage.
The idea is that when cold water gets pumped into the water heater tank, the heating element at the bottom of the tank kicks in and begins to heat the water up. This is much like heating a stockpot of water on the stove.
The water heater is set to heat the water to a certain temperature using a thermostat on the unit, and once the water is heated to that temperature the element turns off and the heated water is held in the tank until it is needed.
When hot water from the tank is used, for washing a load of laundry or doing dishes, the tank is then filled with the same amount of water that was used, so that the entire capacity of the tank is always full. This added water changes the temperature of the water in the tank, as the added water is cold, so the heating element turns on again and heats all of the water up to the set temperature. This process is continuous so that the entire capacity of the tank is always full of water that is always heated to the designated temperature.
Tankless Water Heater
A tankless water heating system works much differently than a standard tank water heater. While both systems provide the same end result of hot water, the process is much different.
A tankless water heating system heats the water up as you need it. Using sensors the system will heat up the pipes that the water is moving through, which will then heat up the water. This method can heat as much as five gallons of water per minute.
Because a tankless system heats water on demand, rather than continuously, it can use up to 25% less power than a standard system.
