Outdoor Water-Conservation For The Fall

|

The leaves are beginning to change color and the back-to-school schedule is in full swing. This can only mean one thing – fall is in the air. Now is the time of year to start thinking about the way that you have been using your plumbing system and how you can start good habit going into the cooler weather.

Water conservation is a priority all year around and fall is no exception. Keeping the monthly utility bills within budget is one important reason for this but, also because water is an important resource and there is a finite amount.

Here are some ways that you and your family can conserve water this fall season:

  • If you don’t already have them, this is a good time of year to consider installing low-flow showerheads in your home. These are a great and inexpensive way to reduce your water consumption by as much as one-third. Low-flow sink fixtures are an additional option.
  • Since the weather will be getting cooler, your lawn and plants will retain more moisture and won’t need to be watered as often or as much. Take this time to adjust the schedule on your sprinkler system so that it runs for less time. Also make sure to turn the system off when the forecast calls for rain.
  • While the cold and rain can make it hard to feel warm – even once you’re inside of the house – make sure to keep shower duration to a minimum. This can seem like a good way to get warmed up but, it is also a sure way to waste water. Instead, fix a cup of hot tea or cider and warm yourself from the inside out. Kids will appreciate a cup of cocoa once they get home from school and, this will prevent the tendency to take a longer shower.

Make water conservation a priority in your home all year around – including during fall. While it might seem like this is the time of year when you don’t have to worry about it as much because of the rainfall, water conservation is an important habit for all of us to have all year.
