Signs of a Sewer System in Trouble

We hear it a lot from our clients, “This sewer problem came out of nowhere” and, while it might seem that way, your sewer system will give subtle hints that there is a problem – you just have to know what to look for.

Some things that you should pay close attention to are:

  • None of the sinks in your home are draining or they are draining very slowly
  • The kitchen sink makes a gurgling or growling noise when you turn the washing machine on
  • None of the toilets in your home are flushing
  • There is a gurgling or bubbling come up from the toilet drain
  • All of the drains in your home have a foul odor coming out of them

If you notice any of these problems happening in the sewer system of your home, make sure to call the team at Absolute Plumbing and Drain right away. Our experts know how to use the latest tools and techniques for repairing and replacing sewer lines.

The Two Types of Clogs

Your sewer system can be divided into two parts – primary and secondary.

  1. The primary sewer system is also referred to as the “main line” sewer system. This is the configuration of pipes and fittings that “catch” the waste and wastewater from all of the fixtures and appliances in your home, and then connects to the municipal sewer system.

Essentially, the primary sewer line is the ‘middleman’ between your home and the water treatment plant. A problem in the main sewer line could range in severity but, if left unrepaired will eventually result in a flood of raw sewage into your yard and the areas surrounding your home.
  2. The secondary sewer system is made up of all of the drains that are specific to a fixture or appliance. For instance, the drains on your toilets, sinks, bathtub, and shower are all parts that make up the secondary sewer system of your home.

Typically, a problem in the secondary sewer system is only going to effect the fixture or appliance where it has occurred. However, if you leave a clog, leak, or other kind of damage unrepaired in the secondary sewer system – it could escalate to a much bigger problem.
