The Right Way to Use a Flange Plunger

|

The Basics of Unclogging a Toilet

Some toilet clogs in Concord, California, extend deep into the plumbing system. No plunger will free the deposit, so you need the help of a licensed and trained plumber. Other clogs are surface-level blockages. The right plunger and technique will quickly clear up the situation and restore functionality.

Types of Plungers

Many people assume plungers are one-size-fits-all – they aren’t. If you try to use a cup plunger with a flat and wide opening on a toilet, you’ll never achieve the type of seal needed to break up a clog. Flange plungers are the most popular types of toilet plungers. They feature a curved flap below the lip of the standard cup shape that allows users to create a seal in tight and curved spaces such as the toilet bowl.

Using a Flange Plunger

Use these tips to avoid splashes, overflows, and other unseemly side effects:

  • Prepare the toilet. A half-filled bowl works best for plunging. Add to or remove water if necessary.
  • Start slow. Place the plunger into the bowl and into the drain at a slight angle to create a seal. Push in gently to release the air trapped inside the cup of the plunger. A forceful push can cause unnecessary splashing.
  • Plunge up and down. With the air out of the bell, you can use more force to create movement in the drain. You may need to pump the plunger several times to break the clog.
  • Test the drainage with a cup of water. With the initial blockage cleared, pour a cup of water into the bowl. If the water drains, you can safely flush the toilet, clean up, and move on. If the water remains in the bowl, you may need the help of a professional plumber.

In most cases, a flange plunger can easily break a clog and keep your toilet running smoothly. If you encounter a more serious problem, contact our team at (925) 369-3067 for plumbing support.
