With large amounts of soap, toothpaste, and other residue being rinsed down the sink at least twice per day by each member of your family, the bathroom sink can easily become clogged.
To reduce the prevalence of clogs in your home, talk with your family about what can and cannot be rinsed down each of the drains in your home. In the bathroom make sure that everyone knows not to flush baby wipes, q-tips, diapers, or feminine napkins down the toilet. If you have young children, you may even want to child proof your toilet. You can also add hair-catching drain covers to each of your bathroom drains. This is an inexpensive and effective way to make sure that water is allowed to wash down the drain, but hair is caught and can be thrown in the garbage.
In the kitchen, never rinse substances down the drain that are not food. Things like cat litter or harsh chemicals should never be washed down the kitchen sink. If you have a garbage disposal, there are some food items that should not be put into it. These include coffee grounds, starchy or stringy fruits and vegetables, and expandable foods like spaghetti noodles. All of these will quickly lead to a clog in your sink drain.
